Deep Impact

Memphis pulled off the victory short-handed; a testament to their newfound depth. It is a good thing this roster is full of versatility.

More from Beale Street Bears

Already missing starting power forward JaMychal Green (broken jaw), the Grizzlies would lose forward Chandler Parsons just minutes in, then sophomore Dillon Brooks for the crucial fourth quarter.

This stretched an already-thin lineup, and forced Grizzlies Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff to dig deep into the bench. Wayne Selden logged 22 minutes, after just 14 combined minutes in the first two games.

Dillon Brooks logged a season-high 21 minutes before leaving the game. Additionally, Garrett Temple — a career 19 mpg guy — provided 36 minutes of intense defense.

It was an encouraging early display, especially from the wing, where Memphis’ depth issues seemed the most urgent.

Losing Parsons has become sadly predictable. Earning a victory against an elite West foe without both him and (eventually) Brooks affirms this team is built well from the ground-up. The season-opener versus the Indiana Pacers appears to be pure fluke.
