Reaction: Memphis Grizzlies Officially Release New ‘City Edition’ Uniforms
The wait is finally over as the Memphis Grizzlies have released the first images of the 2018-19 season’s “City Edition” Nike uniforms.
Fans of the Memphis Grizzlies have been anxiously awaiting the release of the team’s fourth variation of uniforms for the 2018-19 NBA season.
Though Nike took over the reigns in the 2017-18 season as the sole supplier of the league’s uniforms, the Grizzlies did not receive much of a change to their main combination of uniforms. However, when the “City Edition” variation dropped, it was different. It was unique. It truly paid homage to the city of Memphis.
This season was different from the start, even prior to training camp. Memphis received a change in designs, logos, and colors. It was a rebranding, if you will.
The first three uniform variations were released all at once. There exists your standard home and away uniforms, plus the Memphis Grizzlies’ traditional baby blue alternates. That left one more design to be unveiled.
Just like last season, Nike has made the process very suspenseful. They have waited weeks into the regular season to release the fourth and final uniforms for all 30 NBA teams.
Though the majority of clubs were able to reveal their fourth jersey a few days ago, the Memphis Grizzlies did not make the annoucement until Wednesday.
There is not much difference in this new “City Edition” uniform, which has been coined by the Grizzlies as the “Main Event” variation. The key changes are the colorways. Being as it correlates to the team’s Wrestling Night theme, there are some similarities to the Grizzlies’ mascot, Grizz.
Entering the fourth quarter within each home game, Grizz becomes “Super Grizz,” and these new uniforms display a lot of the same gray and yellow hues that are found on “Super Grizz” when he is in wrestling mode.
Overall, it is a nice touch. Though some fans may not like the design since it is not much different than the other three uniform variations, it is nice to see different colorways that pop on the court. The players — especially rookie Jaren Jackson Jr. — and so should you.
“Memphis,” which is shown in bright yellow, is much more noticeable on this new design, which reminds opponents who they are messing with as soon as they step on the hardwood.
The Memphis Grizzlies continue to integrate their home city and its culture into the rebranding phase. This fourth variation will be on full display when the squad faces the Houston Rockets on December 15th, in addition to five other meetings. Five of six “Main Event” matchups feature an interdivisional foe.
