Memphis Grizzlies: Predicting Mike Conley’s Success in NBA All-Star Weekend’s Skills Challenge
Take One
Chris Kern: “Mike Conley wasn’t selected to the NBA All-Star Game as he had hoped he would be, but at least the NBA did the right thing by inviting him to participate in NBA All-Star Saturday night.
Conley, at 31 years old, is the oldest participant in this year’s Taco Bell Skills Challenge. Orlando Magic center Nikola Vucevic is the next oldest at 28 years old and will be playing in his first All-Star Game on Sunday.
This is an event that consists of primarily younger players, but Conley is the veteran of the group and he will look to take down some of the emerging young stars in the game such as Luka Doncic and De’Aaron Fox.
No one will expect Mike Conley to win this event against younger, more athletic players, but this is a chance for him to shine on the national level. It’s just a Saturday night event during NBA All-Star Weekend, but winning this would mean a lot to Conley and the city of Memphis.
The young players are going to be very tough for him to beat. This is an event that requires elite speed as it is a timed head-to-head event, but he still has a chance to win for sure.
We’ll have to wait and see who he faces in the bracket, but I expect him to win a first-round matchup as long as he isn’t up against De’Aaron Fox. Fox is my pick to win the whole thing as he likely is the fastest player participating.
Either way, it is good to see Conley get invited to participate in this Skills Challenge after he’s been snubbed of the NBA All-Star Game many times. With Mike Conley and Jaren Jackson Jr, the Memphis Grizzlies are well-represented in Charlotte.”
