Bully the Bulls

It’s rarely happened this season, but Memphis will likely be able to enter Wednesday’s game with Chicago as the healthier of the two teams.

The Chicago Bulls have been hit with a wave of injuries, leaving their starting PG day-to-day, along with most of their wings. If Otto Porter (also day-to-day) doesn’t dress, former Grizzly Wayne Selden will be the Bulls’ only healthy small forward.

And while Memphis is missing their stud rookie big – Jaren Jackson Jr – Chicago’s also down their own in Wendell Carter Jr, out indefinitely after thumb surgery.

This should be an ample occasion for the Grizzlies to pounce on wounded prey. Even at full strength, the Bulls are an inexperienced team with a controversial coach. So short-handed, they give up serious talent and depth edges, while playing on the road.

Memphis can apply particular pressure at the point guard (more on that in a moment) and center spots. Robin Lopez has seen his minutes skyrocket (30.7 mpg post-All-Star vs 17.8 pre), as the only legit center on the Bulls’ roster. Cristiano Felicio will be overwhelmed against either Jonas Valanciunas‘ size or Joakim Noah‘s energy.

Head coach Jim Boylen has force-fed the Bulls a tough, old-school style. But even post-deadline deals, Memphis still has a very gritty roster that can easily grind down a weaker foe with physical, disciplined play.
