Memphis Grizzlies: 3 Examples to Finding a ‘Real’ Plan to the Rebuild
By Ed Memphis
Example Three: Houston’s Twist
Another great example of truly exuding ambition is Darryl Morey in Houston. In the late-summer of 2012, after extension talks failed with between the Oklahoma City Thunder and James Harden, Morey kept a close eye on the situation.
Despite not having another elite prospect to offer, let alone one who resembled the stardom of James Harden, Darryl Morey took his best swing for the fences and landed a home-run.
Morey sent an aging pure scorer in Kevin Martin, a young role player in Jeremy Lamb, two first-round Draft picks that both resulted as late-first-round picks, and two second-round picks for the current league MVP.
As a result, the Houston Rockets have not missed the postseason since. Now they are a legit NBA Finals contender with the right piece who attracts other superstars. If nothing else, they have a future Hall-of-Fame player just entering his prime plus a global marketing machine in James Harden.
None of the pieces used to fetch Harden to Houston are starters in the NBA today, and the main component is not even in the league anymore. Needless to say, Darryl Morey found a piece proven in James Harden to get them to the NBA Playoffs no matter who else is playing alongside him.
