Memphis Grizzlies: How Potential NBA Draft Targets Fared In The First Weekend Of The NCAA Tournament
By Chris Kern
Keldon Johnson
Keldon Johnson has been very productive during his freshman season at Kentucky. Through the first 34 games of the season, he is averaging 13.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. His ability to score the basketball was on full display in their opening round win against Abilene Christian.
In that game, he finished 25 points and 6 rebounds on 10-16 shooting, including 3-5 from three-point range. He was aggressive and making those tough shots just as he needed to do. When he is knocking down jump shots he is a very good player, but he has struggled with that at times throughout the season.
They had a tight game with Wofford in the second round and Johnson was a nonfactor for most of the game. He missed a lot of time due to foul trouble and he was unable to get good looks at the basket. The way Wofford defended made it tough for Kentucky to get going offensively but if you want to be successful at the next level you need to be able to step up in moments like this.
He finished with nine points and four rebounds in just 22 minutes of action. He was 4-8 from the field including 1-3 from three-point range. The Wildcats were able to get the win which is all that matters, but they will need more out of him if they want to advance to the Final Four in Minneapolis.
Kentucky will take on Houston Friday night in Kansas City and he will need to be productive. The Cougars are a good defensive team and they will make it tough on Johnson all game long. This will be a good matchup for him as scouts start to finalize scouting reports as the college basketball season comes to an end.
