April Fools! Extending the Problem

Though the previous four mishaps are all bad in their own right, this next one stands out above them all. There is a correlation. A link, if you will.

Through all of these aforementioned decisions, Chris Wallace has been the Memphis Grizzlies’ General Manager. He has been the lead decision-maker. Even if these are group decisions being made, he is the chairman taking any credit as well as any blame. It is what his position entails.

In late-2016, the Memphis Grizzlies extended the contract of Wallace. Plenty of fans were already calling for Wallace to be canned, but April Fools! He was retained. His tenure was extended. He remains in-office today.

More from Grizzlies All-Time Lists

Consider all the failed NBA Draft picks. Plus, there have been five different head coaches since the 2007-08 season. The failed trades. The lack of talent brought in via NBA Free-Agency. The list goes on, and so does Chris Wallace’s time in Memphis with the Grizzlies.

It has not all been negatives for Wallace. Not every Draft selection has been a dud. He has been able to keep Mike Conley in Memphis for 12 seasons and potentially more. The team reached the Western Conference Finals once this decade and achieved a seven-year stretch of playoff appearances. It all put the Grizzlies on the map and made them respectable.

Still, as the Memphis Grizzlies enter a new era of basketball, enough is enough. It is time to place a new mind with a new vision in the role as General Manager. Chris Wallace delivered this franchise its best days, but the resources have been exhausted. It is time for a new face to hold this title.

Whenever the Grizzlies land a new General Manager, hopefully there is no April Fools reference attached to the decision. The fans deserve to stay away from major goofs and gaffes. With Wallace in charge, the fan base has endured enough of the hard knocks.
