Elliot Perry and his socks did not have the best luck in 2018 at the NBA Draft Lottery, but 2019 presents a second chance for him and the Memphis Grizzlies.

Tuesday, May 14th is a very important date for the Memphis Grizzlies. The NBA Draft Lottery will determine if they own a first-round pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, which would be (currently) the only selection attached to their name. As they await their fate, the Grizzlies have determined that Elliot Perry will continue to be their good luck charm.

If you ask Elliot Perry, however, he will say that his socks (yes, you read that right) are the real good luck charm. Hopefully this year, he picks the luckiest pair of socks the world has to offer. In 2018, the Memphis Grizzlies landed the fourth overall pick — which resulted in the selection of Jaren Jackson Jr. Still, they blew their odds of the No. 2 overall pick.

Last year, Perry went with some old black socks — rather plain — that did not provide the signs of a good luck charm that they had hoped. Thankfully the basketball gods were nice to the Grizzlies on that day in 2018 and they did not slide beyond fourth. Perhaps Elliot Perry needs to go with some crazier socks — perhaps Memphis Grizzlies-inspired — in order to swing things in the team’s favor. It couldn’t hurt, right?

In looking back, Memphis finished the 2017-18 season with the second-worst record in the entire NBA. At the NBA Draft Lottery, with Elliot Perry representing the franchise and the city, the team fell just shy of the second pick. It is rare to see the Grizzlies’ Front Office on the positive side of a Draft selection, but they hit the jackpot with Jackson Jr.

This week, the Memphis Grizzlies made their decision on who to send to Chicago for the NBA Draft Lottery event. They will go with Elliot Perry for a second-consecutive year, but are also adding Zach Kleiman, who has earned a role of increased responsibility since the Grizzlies restructured their organization one month ago.

Outside of Memphis, Tennessee, not many NBA fans will recognize Elliot Perry. Being as May 14th’s NBA Draft Lottery has the potential to be huge for the Memphis Grizzlies — in front of the nation’s eyes — it would have been wise to send someone such as Jaren Jackson Jr. for additional exposure, just as Beale Street Bears recommended in the past week. Memphis needs to take full advantage when chances for major exposure come along, and they did not do that this time around.

For now, the Memphis Grizzlies are placing their faith on Elliot Perry’s luck once more. It is up to him and his lucky socks to bring home a chance of Zion Williamson or Ja Morant, which would totally boost the franchise’s future outlook to a place it has never been before.
