Even though they were never thought of as a title-contender in 2020-21, the Memphis Grizzlies were an extremely threatening NBA team. The young squad flashed its potential all season long, taking down teams that were thought of as being much better than them.

But there was one small, vital nagging thought throughout the entire year — the Grizzlies are one piece away from contending.

On the surface, it’s simple.

The Grizzlies are one piece away from contending but finding that piece may be easier said than done. Thankfully, Memphis has done a great job putting together a team that meshes extremely well, so you have to have some trust in the fact that they can find a good complimentary player.

The Memphis Grizzlies have a logjam on the wing in the worst way imaginable

Right now, the Memphis Grizzlies should be in the market for a wing player. More specifically, they should begin to look for a starting-caliber shooting guard that can put the ball in the bucket.

This is a slippery slope of a subject since the Grizzlies have a logjam at the wing position. They found a gem in the 2020 NBA Draft in Desmond Bane, who has emerged as one of the team’s best shooters. Beyond that, they have De’Anthony Melton and Grayson Allen, both of whom are also elite shooters. Each of those guys shoots over 39% from long-range.

But while Memphis has depth at the two-guard spot, there isn’t a clear starter at that position. With Jaren Jackson Jr. back in the lineup, the starting role has been given to Dillon Brooks, pushing Kyle Anderson to the small forward position. The Grizzlies don’t currently have an actual shooting guard.

This is why this upcoming free agent could be the perfect fit in Memphis.
