The Grizzlies didn’t gain more value, but they found value in the right places with this trade

Like many deals this offseason, the Grizzlies’ trade with the Timberwolves was a means to an end. I’ve already detailed what this trade has turned into, but here’s a small figure to help visually.

  • Grizzlies Traded Away: Patrick Beverley
  • Grizzlies Received: Jarrett Culver, Kris Dunn, Carsen Edwards

Carsen Edwards would eventually be cut, but Kris Dunn and Jarrett Culver remain on the Grizzlies’ roster.

The biggest win out of this trade would have to be the acquisition of Dunn, who is likely the Grizzlies’ planned backup point guard of the future, especially considering their apparent willingness to part ways with current backup Tyus Jones.

Dunn is another player who was once a highly-sought-after guy in the NBA Draft, being picked up with the fifth-overall pick. Defensively, he has been a really strong NBA player, but he hasn’t done quite as much offensively. Even so, Dunn averaged 13.4 points, six assists, and two steals at his peak in just his second season in the league.

Memphis is likely betting on their ability to move him back toward that form.

Memphis Grizzlies-Minnesota Timberwolves Trade Re-grade: B+

I have to level with you guys — I don’t know what I was thinking when I originally gave the deal an A-. It was an exciting time and I was betting on the future of this trade. My new grade is actually slightly lower in a B+, though I feel more optimistic now.

It’s hard to act like this was the greatest trade in the world — it wasn’t. That said, it gave the Grizzlies what they needed in a potential long-term backup point guard.

Next. Grizzlies could have the best defense in the NBA in 2021. dark

This is a really solid risk-free deal that should only continue to pay dividends down the road.
