It has been an extremely busy week for the Grizzlies leading up to their Summer League campaign, which is set to start Saturday afternoon. The trades of Santi Aldama and, most importantly, franchise star Ja Morant marked the end of the Next Gen Era.
Being selected third overall in what should be a stacked 2026 NBA Draft, Cam Boozer has everything it takes to make an immediate impact and become a leader for the team early on. After such a pivotal moment in franchise history, Cam Boozer just broke his silence on the Ja Morant trade and said what Grizzlies fans are feeling.
Cam Boozer and Ja Morant will not have ended up playing a game together in Memphis; however, it feels like a pretty significant passing of the torch moment. While the Grizzlies have promising players such as Cedric Coward and Zach Edey, Cam Boozer is being put in the perfect spot to emerge as the leader of this next era.
Boozer's latest words sum up what Grizzlies fans are thinking
Today, Cam Boozer threw the first pitch at the Memphis Redbirds' game. In the latest piece from Damichael Cole of The Commercial Appeal, Cole captured some quotes from the event, including Boozer's thoughts on the trade (subscription required). Boozer had the following to say:
"Obviously I didn’t know it was going to happen ... Ja is a great player. It’s not our decision to make. It’s the front office’s (decision). I think we got a great young core. I think that’s what they’re looking to build off of, so I think (the future) is really exciting." - Cam Boozer
Despite the fact Boozer and Morant will not have played a single game together, these words carry significant weight when considering the Grizzlies' current situation. Ja Morant is obviously still very talented and one of the most entertaining players throughout the league. Despite Morant coming off the worst season of his career, it is understandable why plenty still believe he will bounce back.
On the other hand, trading Morant signals the pivot towards a new direction, and Grizzlies fans have an exciting young core to look forward to. There will understandably be some skepticism about how this next era of Grizzlies basketball will fare, especially given how exciting the Next Gen Era was.
But with the selection of Cam Boozer and the fact the Grizzlies have plenty of young talent, there is a golden chance for Boozer to kickstart an exciting new era in Memphis. It also helps that the Grizzlies have significant draft capital to work with for at least the next seven seasons.
The Ja Morant trade was a challenging one for the fanbase, but Grizzlies fans can still be thrilled about the future and what a team led by Cam Boozer can accomplish.
