After trading Ja Morant, the Grizzlies have fully committed to a new rebuild, and the Next Gen Era is no more. It is never easy for a fanbase to hear the word "rebuild," but the Grizzlies can absolutely get back into playoff contention very soon. If there is a player who can quickly lead the Grizzlies back to being one of the league's most promising teams, it is Cam Boozer.
By trading Ja Morant today, the Grizzlies have effectively given the keys to the franchise to Cam Boozer. After being selected third overall last week, Boozer has enormous shoes to fill right away, especially considering how beloved Ja Morant is. However, the good news is that Boozer already embraces the challenge and will get the dream opportunity to lead the Grizzlies early.
Despite coming off a 25-57 season, the Grizzlies have an abundance of future assets, and players such as Cedric Coward and Zach Edey are good foundational pieces to have around Cam Boozer.
But now, similar to Ja Morant being selected in the top 3, Boozer will have an immediate chance to establish himself as the guy in Memphis.
Cam Boozer will have every chance to succeed right away
With how strong the 2026 NBA Draft is projected to be and the fact that Cam Boozer had a case to go #1 overall in this draft, Boozer can immediately be penciled in as a starter next to Zach Edey. Boozer is an extremely well-rounded offensive prospect and should be a dream fit for Tuomas Iisalo's offense. Boozer is a gifted playmaker, can set screens, and is also capable of scoring in multiple ways.
Now, that does not mean that Cam Boozer should immediately be expected to reach All-Star or even All-NBA levels of good as a rookie. But Boozer has the tools to make an immediate winning impact and could potentially win Rookie of the Year, similar to Ja Morant. Being able to play next to players such as Isaiah Stewart and Zach Edey will help alleviate any potential defensive concerns early on.
Despite the fact he will be 19 years old when his rookie year starts, Cam Boozer is one of the most talented prospects the team has ever selected. It wouldn't come as a surprise if Cam Boozer, alongside Cedric Coward and Zach Edey, helped lead the team to at least a Play-In Tournament appearance.
There will understandably be concern about how fast the rebuild progresses, given how high of a peak Ja Morant reached early in his Memphis days. But Grizzlies fans should love how balanced the team is starting to be, even though most of the roster is incredibly young. It will be crucial for the Grizzlies to find their true #1 guy, but they have more added size and toughness this offseason.
This offseason has signaled a shift in identity, and now Cam Boozer has a golden opportunity to lead the next era now that Ja Morant has been traded.
