The crazy part about Cam Boozer's strong start to Summer League is the fact that he will turn just 19 years old later this month. It is extremely impressive to see his basketball IQ and how well rounded his offense has looked so far. But if there is one key skill that shows how scary Cam Boozer's offensive game could eventually become, it is his three-point shooting.
It is no secret that Cam Boozer had a dominant freshman season at Duke and that it is very difficult to find flaws in his offensive game. Despite the fact that Boozer made 39.1% of his threes at Duke, there were valid questions about how well his three-point shooting would scale at the NBA level. The percentage looked great, but Boozer only attempted 3.6 threes per game.
Cam Boozer's three-point shot could evolve into a strength soon
Despite any concerns about his jumpshot at the next level, Cam Boozer is quickly erasing any of those concerns about how well he can shoot from the perimeter in the NBA. It's obviously a good development for Grizzlies fans, but many outside of Memphis are starting to take notice too.
In a recent episode of The Hoop Collective, Brian Windhorst and Tim MacMahon were discussing how impressive Boozer's three-point shooting has looked in Summer League so far. Brian Windhorst had the following to say:
"And by the way, Boozer, you know, the thing that has impressed me for Boozer this week, McMahon, is how many threes he's hitting." - Brian Windhorst, The Hoop Collective
McMahon followed up by saying his three-point shot looks really good and that Boozer will be a really good offensive player. It is great to see the glowing praise that Tim McMahon and Brian Windhorst gave Cam Boozer's three-point shot, but it is clearly evident on film as well.
Boozer has made 62.5% of his threes so far in Summer League, going five of eight behind the arc. While those numbers are great, it's clear that Boozer's release looks much faster and confident compared to his Duke days. Even though Boozer obviously won't shoot 62.5% from three in the NBA, he will be so much more difficult to guard if he's hitting at least 36-37% of his threes.
Cam Boozer is already an incredible playmaker, and we have seen that he can score efficiently at the rim. If Boozer's three-point shot ends up translating during the regular season, the Grizzlies could have one of their best offensive engines ever. It's simply a skill that could be the difference between Boozer being just a good player or being one of the best players in the entire NBA.
It will be fun to monitor the evolution of Boozer's jumpshot, but the early signs are extremely promising so far.
