However, Cam Spencer is a name that can't be forgotten about, and he could end up being the dream supporting piece early in the Grizzlies' rebuild.
Cam Spencer is coming off a breakthrough second season in Memphis and the shooting ability he showed since his college days really started to shine. Spencer averaged 11.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 5.6 assists while shooting a very impressive 44.9% from three. Spencer also made 94% of his free throws and has established himself as one of the best shooters in the NBA.
The Grizzlies have done well selecting players in the second round, and it looks like Cam Spencer is another one of those success stories. Now, it looks like his skillset can be a huge asset as the Grizzlies hope to speed up their rebuild.

It's always hard to find positives in a year where the Grizzlies were heavily injured and eventually ended up tanking. But if one thing is clear, Cam Spencer made a significant playmaking leap and is the perfect fit for the start of the Cam Boozer era in Memphis. Spencer's shooting and playmaking should be a significant boost for players such as Zach Edey and now third overall pick Cam Boozer.
At least early on, the best ways to maximize the lineups around Boozer are to have quality shooting, playmaking, and defense. Spencer won't be the defensive boost in lineups with Boozer, but his elite perimeter shooting and underrated playmaking should help him click with Boozer. Spencer is also a strong fit with Edey, but his game could mesh extremely well with Boozer's early on.
Plus, even though Spencer is best as a shooting guard, he can occasionally fill in at point guard and give the team another ball-handler. Whether Spencer is a pick-and-roll ball handler or spot-up shooter, he's comfortable scoring in multiple ways. Another important aspect of his game is that he does well to suppress turnovers, as he had a 4.3 AST/TO ratio this past season.
Cam Spencer will continue having to improve as a defensive option, but the skillset he brings offensively is perfect for this version of the Grizzlies. With a revamped frontcourt, Spencer should be able to show the same positives in his game as last season but potentially be even better.
With an intriguing guard group that still has some valid questions, Cam Spencer could end up being a surprising standout piece for the Grizzlies this season. Understandably, Cam Boozer, Cedric Coward, and Zach Edey will draw most of the attention, but look out for Cam Spencer to be a potentially perfect surrounding piece for this group.
