Cam Boozer has gotten off to a great start this summer, with his winning impact already being so noticeable. Boozer has already had the chance to play alongside Cedric Coward, but arguably the most exciting thing is that we haven't seen him play alongside Zach Edey yet. So far, Boozer's playmaking is looking like his biggest strength, and playing next to Edey could take it to another level.
The assist numbers simply don't do justice to the playmaking Cam Boozer has shown throughout Summer League so far. Whether it is passing out of the post, entry passes, or outlet passes, Boozer has already shown an impressive comfort as a passer early on. Despite drawing significant defensive attention, the Grizzlies' offense has simply been more of a positive with Cam Boozer on the floor.
Edey's presence will help boost Boozer's playmaking
Plenty of discussion surrounding why the Cam Boozer and Zach Edey frontcourt can be so devastating comes down to the physicality and rebounding they both bring. However, Edey might be the perfect fit to help Boozer's playmaking be even more devastating for opposing defenses.
Cam Boozer is already showing the early signs of being a well-rounded offensive hub, but let's focus on the fit next to Zach Edey. Edey played just 11 games last season, but he was a disruptive force defensively and showed improved efficiency as a scorer. The Grizzlies still need to surround Edey with more quality entry passers on the roster, but Boozer will help to fill some of that void early.
Another factor to consider is that Cam Boozer has been a strong playmaker in Summer League despite seeing plenty of double teams and even triple teams at times. Teams will simply be making a huge mistake if they bring double teams on Cam Boozer or Zach Edey. Boozer's playmaking is an enormous strength, of course, but Zach Edey is also a capable passer himself.
Whether Boozer is in the post or he is being used as a primary ball-handler early on, some of the early offensive gravity he is showing early on should give him plenty of opportunities to find Edey at the rim. Boozer can throw lobs and make post-entry passes that not everyone on the roster can make.
Zach Edey helped make the offense around him better last year despite some injuries, and the same thing should happen for Cam Boozer as well. Most of the conversation leading into this season will be how well the duo can rebound together, but look out for Zach Edey to help significantly boost Cam Boozer's playmaking early on.
With Cam Boozer entering his rookie season and Zach Edey entering his third season, the Grizzlies have one of the most promising young frontcourt duos on paper. It would not come as a shock if the Boozer and Edey duo ended up getting the Grizzlies back into playoff contention sooner than expected.
