The Grizzlies release their new city edition uniforms with soul

The NBA collaborated with Nike to launch city edition uniforms beginning in the 2017-18 season to connect each team’s uniform design to the franchises' city. The Memphis Grizzlies have consistently been one of the better teams with their designs adding a feel that connects the team to the city of Memphis and this season was no different.

The Grizzlies announced their new city edition uniforms on November 14th with their first scheduled game to wear them being today at home against the Denver Nuggets. This season's version of the Grizzlies' city edition uniform pays homage to the 50th Anniversary of Memphis' ABA team, the Memphis Sounds. Added in is the city of Memphis, the 1970s-80s era, and its music, with a "GrzNxtGen" energy and vibe.

Uniform History

The Memphis Sounds ABA franchise was taken over by the ABA commissioner in 1974 and he gathered co-owners with local ties to the city and franchise. Naming them the Memphis Sounds gave the team a connection to the city of Memphis as it honored its musical heritage with the inclusion of the late great Issac Hayes as a co-owner.

The 2024-25 city edition uniform gives that legacy justice while mixing with the current Grizzlies' style. Its design features a red base similar to the Memphis Sounds' past uniforms from the 1974-75 ABA season. This year's uniform adds a pinch of Memphis' famous Beale Street Blue from their current uniform combination along with similarities from the Grizzlies' Memphis Soul city edition uniforms from the 2020-21 NBA season.
