Present: Tony Allen

Although I would rather have TA coming off the bench, he’s our best option currently at the shooting guard position. He has the most experience not only as a player, but with the starters like Conley and Gasol. He can still shut down one of the opposing team’s wing players, which allows Conley and Parsons, hopefully soon, to relax more on defense and use the energy for offense.

I’m a huge James Ennis fan, but Allen gives the team a better chance to compete this year. If this team was in a lower position, I would be all on the “Ennis starting train” this year since the potential is clearly there.

Future: Not on Roster Currently

I don’t see Tony Allen as the future at shooting guard. Troy Daniels is intriguing but needs to improve on many aspects of his game. I like James Ennis and what he brings but needs to develop and be more consistent. He might have a better shot at being the future small forward.

The draft has some intriguing prospects, and free agency has some potential as well with guys like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope or Tim Hardaway Jr. on the market. Currently the Grizzlies have no picks. KCP might be too pricey, and Hardaway Jr. can be very inconsistent. So unless the Grizzlies trade into the draft, next year will be a stopgap of either the same players or a cheap free agent.
