One-Trick Pony

During Nick Young’s younger years in the NBA, he was a hot commodity for plenty of reasons. Not only was he a three-point threat, but he was an aggravator on the defensive end and he was a playmaker in general.

Today, as the Denver Nuggets recently found out, he does not bring much to the NBA table. He is at the end of the line of his NBA career, though that is not a bad thing. He is accomplished. Though Young can create his own shot on a small scale in spot minutes, he has transformed into a catch-and-shoot option along the perimeter.

Nick Young had success with the Golden State Warriors because he was an end-of-the-bench guy and he did not have to do much other than troll the arc as the team’s world class ball movement found him and their other sharpshooters for open looks.

Many players would succeed in the Warriors’ game plans, as it should be easy to excel when an offense is being coordinated by Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant.

The Memphis Grizzlies need much more than a one-trick pony. They need a guy that can make plays, get defensive stops, and also light up the scoreboard. It would be nice to have a consistent offensive spark plug, but the one thing Nick Young has been known for throughout his career (on the court) is being a streaky shooter.
