Thinking Ahead

So with all of that said, let’s say the Memphis Grizzlies are able to convey the pick this year. That would be a considerable swing from the Grizzlies free-falling toward the No. 1 overall pick just before February’s NBA Trade Deadline. This swing would clearly be the result of good chemistry developing amongst the current group, likely enough chemistry to build upon going into next season. Yet, it is not likely enough talent to do too much championship-contending damage.

The Grizzlies would not have a pick in either round of the 2019 NBA Draft being as they have already traded away their second-rounder in the Justin Holiday deal. So barring a Draft Night trade, conveying the pick means the Memphis Grizzlies totally punt on this Draft and go into the summer of 2019 with no new prospects to develop.

Once the offseason is here, fans will be expecting trades or free-agent acquisitions to supplement the Grizzlies not having a draft pick. The thing is, without a lot of coveted trade assets, cap space nor attraction for big free-agents — aside from mid-level free-agents — what other options do they have to build on the chemistry the current group developed to finish out the season?
