NBA Free-Agency: 4 Reasons the Memphis Grizzlies Should Bring Back Vince Carter
Publicity Stunt
It should be expected to see a lot of interest in Vince Carter once NBA Free-Agency opens on the evening of June 30th. From a basketball standpoint, he should be a cheap option and he is coming off of a season shooting almost 40% from three-point land. Especially when considering the Memphis Grizzlies and their ongoing offensive and outside shooting woes, this could be one solution.
However, it expands beyond the X’s and O’s. It would not be surprising to see nearly the entire league reach out to Carter in hopes of signing him because of the publicity they would receive.
Think about Dwyane Wade and Dirk Nowitzki this season (2018-19). Arenas across the league were selling out just to catch the final appearances being made by these two guys in each NBA city. Spectators wanted to see D-Wade and Dirk before they decided to hang ’em up for good. This is exactly what will happen this upcoming season with Vince Carter.

“Vinsanity” is a basketball icon across the globe. Fans already fly in from other countries just to catch Carter take the court and witness his mind-boggling dunks in person. That will be enhanced this season. Plus, all of the national television exposure will be enhanced for the team that signs Vince. They will want to show some of his final games in the NBA. They will do live look-ins more often, too.
There are also the times that he may score 20+ points in a game. He had eight games of 15+ points this season. But what about doing it at the age of 42 or 43?! That is absolutely unreal. Plus, again…his dunks! Vince Carter is a walking legend and he is making history by the game at this point. Regardless of where other free-agent superstar names sign this offseason, Carter should rightfully be one of the biggest headlines all season long in 2019-20.
For this reason, the small-market Memphis Grizzlies absolutely need to get in on the offering to Vince Carter. It was a pleasure to have him as a member of the roster for three seasons, and it would be an opportunity to pick up where he left off. That familiarity he already has with the organization should enable Memphis to have a leg up on some of the competition within the bidding war.
