Desmond Bane

Shooting guard

Texas Christian University (Sr.)

The Grizzlies traded two future second-round picks to the Boston Celtics for the 30th pick in this year’s draft, which Memphis used to take TCU’s Desmond Bane.

Bane excels shooting behind the 3-point arc. He can bring versatility to the Grizzlies’ offense as he can run the pick-and-roll and thrive as a spot-up shooter. Bane is also a very capable on-ball defender and plays with tremendous energy and hustle. Grizzlies fans can expect Bane to be a true two-player that will space the floor, someone who can develop into a true scoring threat if he improves as a finisher at the rim.

Age: 22

Physicals: 6’6″, 215 pounds

2019-20 stats: 16.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 45.2 percent FG, 44.2 percent 3PT

Awards: Two-time All-Big 12, two-time USBWA All-District

Offense: Bane is considered one of the best shooters in this draft class. He shot 44 percent from three in his senior season at TCU. He can spot up in off-ball situations and knock down shots, and he can work in the pick-and-roll and pull up from deep.

In his game film, Bane loves to come off high ball screens and pull up to shoot when defenders give him space. Bane is a very versatile shooter that will space the floor for the Grizzlies. He also can make smart passes out of the pick-and-roll and shows that he has playmaking capability. To become a true three-level scorer Bane will need to improve on finishing at the rim. Bane will add a sharpshooter from all over the floor for the Grizzlies’ offense. Bane led the Big 12 in 3-point percentage last season, which shows how great of a knock-down shooter he is.

Defense: Bane is a capable wing defender who has a strong frame. He can be physical in on-ball defense and looks to put in good effort on that side of the ball. Bane seems to be a better overall team defender than a pure lockdown defender. At TCU, Bane played the passing lanes well, which led to deflections and steals. With his size and high IQ of the game, Bane will be able to contribute to the Grizzlies on the defensive end.
