The Memphis Grizzlies would feel too many instant repercussions to make this trade

On paper, this trade seems fine and dandy for the Memphis Grizzlies. They ship off Jonas Valanciunas, the oldest player who receives significant playing time on the team, and receive one of the more promising players under the age of 21 in the league.

But the more you look at this trade, the more difficult it seems to maintain.

For starters, the Grizzlies would lose out on a ton of instant success. Without Jonas Valanciunas, Memphis would have missed the playoffs this season — no doubt about it. The same could be said about Kyle Anderson, who was sneakily one of the most impactful players on the team.

In all likelihood, the Grizz would miss the playoffs next season, which is fine. That said, the instant success they’ve seen has been huge for their young corps’ development. That would be gone.

To take another angle, if Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., and James Wiseman all turned into players that could help this team win a title, the Grizzlies may not have the money to make that happen. There will be too many paydays falling within a two-year window and in all likelihood, Memphis would have to let somebody go.

Again, this trade seems ideal. It’s just unlikely to happen.
