The Memphis Grizzlies trading for Ben Simmons doesn’t make much sense on paper

The first and perhaps most glaring issue in regards to trading for Ben Simmons is the simple fact that the 76ers won’t give him away for much. Yes, they may be looking to trade him away, but it’s important to remember that this is a 24-year old point guard who has made NBA All-Star appearances in three consecutive seasons.

Here’s what his stat line looked like in 2021:

  • 14.3 PPG
  • 6.9 APG
  • 7.2 RPG
  • 1.6 SPG
  • 55.7% FG

The stats are impressive, which means that Philadelphia will be in no rush to trade him away. If the Grizzlies were to approach the 76ers, they’d have to show up with an extremely impressive offer that likely involved giving away a key piece of their own.

For the right player, that might be worth it. That said, he wouldn’t fit on the Memphis Grizzlies’ roster in any way.

For starters, the Grizzlies already have a franchise point guard in Ja Morant. This wouldn’t be an issue if either of these players could shoot, but both of them are among the worst shooters at the point guard position in the NBA.

Pair that with the fact that the Grizzlies are a generally bad shooting team. Signing Simmons would turn an offense that was 24th in the league in 3-pointers made per game into one that dwells even closer to the bottom of the league.

Next. Ja Morant should be a lock for the 2022 All-Star game. dark

This trade, in all respects, makes no sense whatsoever but crazier things have happened.
