Memphis Grizzlies G Grayson Allen could be playing for his next contract

Grayson Allen could be a player who signs a contract extension. That said, the Grizzlies don’t have a particular need for him with sharpshooters Desmond Bane and De’Anthony Melton behind him on the roster. Even so, it seems like Taylor Jenkins has always preferred playing Allen over either of those young players.

The former Duke guard averaged a career-high with 10.6 points per game in 2020-21. He shot the ball pretty well but left fans with much to be desired near the end of the season. At a higher volume, he wasn’t as consistent of a shooter as we know he can be.

Also, the third-year guard seemed to make a transition toward a volume shooter role, as opposed to a more well-rounded guard. This could be a schematic plan by head coach Taylor Jenkins, but it seems more likely that Allen’s injury-riddled year kept him out of the paint for a majority of the year.

His 2-point shot volume dropped even though he attempted 1.7 more 3-pointers per contest. If he can stay healthy, we should see this number continue to rise. The Grizzlies will have the option to extend his contract this season, but if they don’t, they may see a more motivated Allen out on the court.

Things may get complicated with a handful of young shooters on the roster, especially if Memphis decides to draft another wing. Even so, I expect Allen to put up more shots at a similar efficiency next season.
