This was already a great offseason for Grizzlies fans, but it also helps that LeBron James is now out of the Western Conference. LeBron James signing with the 76ers doesn't have too many implications for the Grizzlies, but suddenly the Grizzlies' swift action to sign Quinten Post makes even more sense. Plus in the process, the Grizzlies dealt a blow to the Warriors' offseason plans.
Yes, it's true that it didn't make sense for the Warriors to match the offer the Grizzlies gave to Quinten Post. They still have to give Draymond Green a new deal, but another key piece of why they didn't match Post's deal at the time was because of their involvement in the LeBron sweepstakes.
Signing Charles Bassey to a one-year contract was logical for the Warriors given the circumstances, but now they missed out on both Quinten Post and LeBron James. Now, the Grizzlies surprisingly benefit from the end result of LeBron's decision.
The Grizzlies could be a perfect situation for Quinten Post
With strong rim protectors in Zach Edey and Isaiah Stewart, it made sense that the Grizzlies wanted a stretch big to round out their center rotation. While Quinten Post didn't shoot the three-ball as well this past season, his sample size from Boston College and his rookie season suggest he should be able to bounce back.
Think of recent examples of Jock Landale and Jay Huff, who showed significant offensive growth in Memphis. Post may not be one of the go-to scorers on the team, but he has everything it takes to be a reliable offensive presence off the bench for the Grizzlies. Plus, could Post potentially be a more servicable defender than many fans expect? I can't quite rule out that possibility yet.
Quinten Post eventually fell out of the rotation throughout this past season, but he showed some early promising defensive signs. At 7 feet tall, Post will have to get stronger, but early in the season with the Warriors, he had one of the best defensive ratings in the league and looked primed for a big sophomore leap.
While that did not end up being the case, it gives hope that the Grizzlies can maximize his talents. We have seen the Warriors struggle in recent seasons with developing some of their young talents, and Quinten Post could potentially be another case.
In the event that Post struggles in Memphis, the Grizzlies gave him a low-risk deal that they can easily get out of. However, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the Grizzlies so early in their rebuild, and Quinten Post could end up being a pleasant surprise this season.
The LeBron sweepstakes weren't supposed to really mean all that much for the Grizzlies, but now it looks even better that they acted quickly to get Quinten Post.
