Michael Carter-Williams

As teams had to make final decisions on their non-guaranteed contracts this past week, perhaps the biggest name to hit the market was Michael Carter-Williams, a former NBA Rookie of the Year award winner.

Since his days in Philadelphia, there has not been a lot of strong value behind Carter-Williams’ name. It really is crazy if you remember his triple-double days with the 76ers. Yet, it truly comes down to fit and chemistry.

As Grizzlies Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff discussed prior to the tip-off of the regular season, Memphis’ strength is in versatility. This perfectly describes Michael Carter-Williams’ game. He has the height, size, and skills to play multiple positions. Though he is not a sharpshooter by any means, his playmaking ability is something that could open doors for Memphis’ offense.

Michael’s health has been an issue throughout his NBA career, plus, he has been delegated to smaller reserve roles ever since he departed Philadelphia. It would be a big risk to even sign MCW to a veteran’s minimum contract, but for a 10-day deal, there is nothing to lose.

If anything, this could be a time to audition Carter-Williams as the Memphis Grizzlies’ third-string point guard for next season. In that role, that is solid value, considering it has not been too many seasons since he was the hottest rookie in the association.
